Sistahs Get Chopped

Elizabeth hosted our March Suppah with a "Chopped" theme.  Chopped is a Food Network show in which contestants receive a basket filled with mystery ingredients that they must use to create an edible dish. They are judged on skill, speed, and ingenuity.  Contestants are allowed to use any additional items from the pantry or fridge.  Check out the show here.

Nancy and Terri drew the appetizer card and opened their basket to discover (to the best of my waning memory)-- asparagus, puff pastry, feta cheese, and Fiber One Cereal.

Susan and Linda made a lovely wilted salad from their ingredients.  The salad included grapefruit, wilted greens, a homemade dressing and to our surprise--crushed brown sugar poptarts!

'

Elizabeth prepared the an entree of shrimp and grits but also had to prepare the side dish since two of our Sistahs made last minute cancellations.

The side dish basket included, risotto, broccoli, sun dried tomatoes and cheese wafers.  Elizabeth steamed the broccoli, added the sun dried tomatoes and sprinkled the crushed cheese wafers as a garnish.  Elizabeth elected not to use the risotto.

Robin and Joy were partners to compete the evening with a dessert.  All praise goes to Robin because Joy and her competitive spirit got a little angry with the ingredients provided.  The desert basket held a bag of semi sweet chocolate morsels, two loaves of pound cake, gummy orange slices, and a pound of bacon.  I believe this basket was provided by Phyllis (who mysteriously backed out on suppah) and Linda (who is new to Sistash and may not pass muster if she continues to play dirty--we did put her on a 90 day probationary period)

Joy and Robin melted the chocolate and orange slices on the stove top while toasting the slices of pound cake.  After cooking the bacon in the oven and crushing it, they put the bacon into the chocolate orange sauce to which they had added Kahlua from Elizabeth's pantry and some sliced strawberries and orange. Thanks to Robin--it was a palatable dessert--but it didn't win any prizes.

The prize for the night went to the salad in a close 4-3 vote with the puff pastry dessert.

Thanks to Elizabeth for a great idea and lots of fun!!!

Dinner February 28

 Mediterranean Tilapia... prepared by Susan

6 tilapia filets

1 cup canned Italian diced tomatoes

1/2 c water-packed artichoke hearts, chopped

1/2 c sliced ripe olives

1/2 c crumbled feta cheese

Place filets in a baking pan coated with cooking spray. Top with tomatoes, artichokes, olives, and cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

 Asparagus (broiled)... prepared by Christy

Wash asparagus thoroughly and bend to snap off ends.  Spray a 9 x 13 pan with olive oil cooking spray.  Place washed asparagus in the pan and lightly toss with olive oil.  Sprinkle sea salt over asparagus; broil for 10 minutes.  Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and finish broiling for 2 additional minutes.
